Abstract:

A paradigm shift in favor of sexual equity has occurred in America as the result of what one could call a cultural migration from a prejudicial mindset to one that tolerates and embraces sexualities deviating from heteronormative ideals. This paper will explore how the cultural shift has affected media representations of LGBT+ characters in film and television, while researching whether or not this increase in representation has an effect on Americans’ evolving mentality and opinions regarding sexual prejudice. Examining how the inclusion of LGBT+ related storylines became more frequent as the sexual equality movement progressed in the United States, this paper will focus on the depiction of gay, lesbian, or transgender characters. With a primary focus on the film Boys Don’t Cry and the television series Ellen, I will reflect on the quality and accuracy of character portrayal in the productions, how the characters and issues featured are viewed by American consumers, and how the show and film have assisted the movement toward sexual equity via their influence on American culture. Ultimately, this paper will provide an answer to the audience about how evolving digital media affects American opinions on the Sexual equity movement.
